CosmosID offers end-to-end whole genome sequencing (WGS) and analysis of microbial isolates. DNA Extraction, Library preparation and Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) is carried out in our CLIA-certified facilities. For data interpretation we use an in-house bioinformatics platform that is built around CosmosID’s class-leading databases and has been optimized for isolate whole genome data.

What is Bacterial Isolate Whole Genome Sequencing?

Bacterial isolate whole genome sequencing (WGS) allows you to quickly characterize and identify a bacterial isolate. Whole Genome Sequencing is used to accurately determine the identity of bacterial genomes, their genotypic characteristics, virulence factors, antibiotic susceptibility, and other essential epidemiologic information.

WGS provides more data than other methods like 16S rRNA sequencing or phenotypic tests and can be used to identify novel bacterial species. Sequencing complete genomes is an invaluable tool for public health surveillance, live biotherapeutics, food safety testing, and outbreak investigations.

CosmosID’s WGS services are designed to help you achieve the most accurate results in the shortest time frame, sequencing entire bacterial isolates in one run. Our high-throughput sequencing platform and optimized bioinformatics pipeline allow us to accurately identify the presence of any bacterial species from a single sample.

Our CLIA-certified laboratories and in-house bioinformatics platform offer you the highest quality data interpretation and analysis of your bacterial genome sequence. We also provide value-added services such as custom sample preparation, data sharing with our customers, and clinical report generation.

Bacterial Isolate SequencingIs Bacterial Whole-Genome Sequencing right for you?

WGS of bacterial isolates offers unique advantages over traditional typing methods and is now available at very affordable rates. Unlike PCR, this affordable technology reveals the complete genetic makeup of an organism and offers unprecedented insight. A single assay reveals:

  • Unambiguous taxonomic classification
  • Highly accurate depiction of strain relatedness, pathogenesis and transmission
  • Functional characteristics like antimicrobial resistance, virulence, and metabolic capabilities

Frequently Asked Questions

What common applications are there for isolate sequencing & analysis?

We support a range of academic and industrial applications including, but not limited to, probiotic/LBP strain characterization, epidemiology, infectious disease research, food safety testing, manufacturing QC and many others!

How long will the process take?

We offer a range of different turnaround time options to suit your project needs with sequencing and analysis being as fast as 3-5 business days.

Do you have the ability to sequence and analyze any species?

Bacterial and fungal organisms differ tremendously based on their cell wall thickness, genome size & GC content. As such, some organisms require a slightly more specialized approach when it comes to DNA extraction, library preparation techniques, targeted coverage and analysis strategy. Once we receive a list of your organisms of interest, we’ll assess these nuances and get back to you with a proposed plan of action. Nonetheless, by assembling genomes de novo, this is well suited to novel strain discovery in a wide range of applications.
