CosmosID is an innovative end-to-end microbiome services company located in Rockville, MD. We provide Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and a custom built best-in-class metagenomics analysis platform for industry leading pathogen identification and microbiome characterization. We are currently recruiting an Associate Research Scientist, R&D to innovate in the following areas:

Job Description

  • The Associate Research Scientist, R&D prepares samples for Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) to analyze body fluids, tissue, and other substances for quantification and/or detection of microorganisms
  • The Associate Research Scientist, R&D researches and applies new techniques in the laboratory from idea through execution, SOP writing, and training of personnel

Responsibilities List:

  • Handle incoming samples for accessioning, organizing, storing, and processing
  • Preparation of samples for NGS testing, which will include DNA/RNA isolation of various sample types, PCR, library

      preparation library quantification and sequencing on the Illumina, Thermofisher, PacBio, or Oxford Nanopore

      sequencing platforms

  • Assisting in assay validation
  • Interpretation of sequencing quality data
  • Troubleshooting sample preparation and sequencing results as needed
  • On-time delivery of client sample testing within quality specifications
  • Adhere to quality management system and laboratory SOPs
  • Develop or modify SOPs as needed
  • Maintain laboratory in a clean, functional state, as well as cleaning, performing or scheduling equipment and

      instrument maintenance/calibration/certification, as required

  • Literature review of NGS methods
  • Development of SOPs for end to end processing of new sample types for NGS
  • Testing, optimizing and benchmarking of new NGS methods


  • Bachelor’s degree in science or related discipline


  • Minimum four years of experience in a molecular biology laboratory

Knowledge and Skills

  • BLS2 working experience
  • Understanding of aseptic technique with focus on pipetting (lab etiquette)
  • Sample accessioning, tracking, and storage experience
  • Processing samples for nucleic acid isolation utilizing bead beating methods
  • Experience with qubit or picogreen DNA quantification
  • Experience with RT-PCR and qPCR
  • Experience with library preparation
  • Experience operating a next generation sequencer (preferred)
  • Experience with nanodrop or bioanalyzer (preferred)
  • Experience with setting up and running laboratory automation equipment (preferred)
  • Experience in CLIA Laboratory setting (preferred)
  • Excellent organizational skills

Physical Requirements

  • Physical stamina as you will often spend hours on your feet performing various tests
  • Ability to carry up to 50 pounds


Position Type: Full-Time
